Common questions from aluminium & copper buyers
What is P1020A aluminium and how is it priced?
P1020A is the primary aluminium specification originally developed by Alcan (now Rio Tinto): Al ≥99.70%, Fe ≤0.20%, Si ≤0.10%, with strict limits on Cu, Zn, Ti and other impurities. It is the de facto LME delivery standard for primary aluminium ingots and the global benchmark for smelter-grade metal. Pricing is LME Aluminium 3-month official settlement price + a regional delivery premium. The Midwest Premium (for US delivery), Rotterdam Premium (Europe) and Japan CIF premium are the main regional benchmarks, reported by Platts and CRU. Premiums fluctuate independently from the LME price, driven by logistics costs, duty structures and regional demand.
What is the difference between ETP and OFE copper?
ETP (Electrolytic Tough Pitch) copper (Cu-ETP / C11000) contains approximately 250 ppm residual oxygen from the electrolytic refining process. It has conductivity ≥100% IACS and is the standard for wire rod, cable, bus bar and general electrical applications. OFE (Oxygen-Free Electronic) copper (Cu-OF / C10200) has oxygen reduced to ≤5 ppm through vacuum or inert-atmosphere casting. This prevents hydrogen embrittlement when brazing or welding in reducing atmospheres, making it essential for audio/video cables, vacuum electronics, medical equipment and high-frequency RF applications. OFE commands a significant price premium over ETP. For most standard electrical applications, ETP is the appropriate and more economical specification.
Which aluminium alloy is right for marine applications?
The 5xxx series (Mg-alloyed aluminium) is the international standard for marine structural applications. 5083-H321 is the most widely specified grade for shipbuilding, offshore platforms, LNG vessel insulation structures and cryogenic applications — it provides excellent corrosion resistance in seawater, high weldability and maintains strength at low temperatures (down to −196°C). 5086 is an alternative for less demanding marine environments. 5052 is used for lighter-gauge marine applications such as fuel tanks and hull plating on smaller vessels. The 6xxx and 7xxx series have lower corrosion resistance in marine environments and are not recommended for direct seawater exposure without protective coating.
What does EN 10204 3.1 mean for non-ferrous metals?
EN 10204 is the European standard for metallic product inspection documents. Type 3.1 means a certificate issued by the manufacturer's authorized inspection representative confirming that the product meets the requirements of the order specification — including chemical composition, mechanical properties and dimensions. For non-ferrous metals, the relevant product standards (EN 573, EN 485, EN 755 for aluminium; EN 1978, EN 1652, IEC 60104 for copper) define the acceptance criteria. Type 3.2 is countersigned by an independent third party (SGS, TÜV, Lloyd's) and is required for safety-critical applications such as pressure vessels, structural aerospace components and nuclear-related supply. Atabaş Group supplies 3.1 as standard and 3.2 on request.
Can Atabaş Group supply LME-registered cathode and ingot brands?
Yes. LME-registered copper cathode brands (conforming to EN 1978 Cu-CATH-1 and LME physical delivery specification) and LME-approved aluminium ingot brands (P1020A equivalent, LME Shape A) are available. Specific brand preferences should be stated in the inquiry — LME brand availability varies by origin and market conditions. For non-LME registered material, full EN 10204 3.1 mill certification and SGS/BV inspection at load port are provided as standard. Please contact us at atabas.com.tr/contact-us with your required grade, quantity, brand preference and delivery destination.
